Flower in a sea of thorns

"By the grace of Allah, you are gentle towards the people; if you had been stern and ill-tempered, they would have dispersed from round about you" [Qur'an 3:159]

About himself the Prophet (pbuh) said:

"Allah has sent me as an apostle so that I may demonstrate perfection of character, refinement of manners and loftiness of deportment." [Muwatta; Musnad; Mishkat]

By nature he was gentle and kind-hearted, always inclined to be gracious and to overlook the faults of others. Politeness and courtesy, compassion and tenderness, simplicity and humility, sympathy and sincerity were some of the keynotes of his character.

In the cause of right and justice he could be resolute and severe but more often than not, his severity was tempered with generosity. He had charming manners which won him the affection of his followers and secured their devotion. Though virtual king of Arabia and an apostle of Allah, he never assumed an air of superiority. Not that he had to conceal any such vein by practice and artifice -- with fear of Allah, sincere humility was ingrained in his heart.

He used to say,

"I am a Prophet of Allah but I do not know what will be my end." [Sahih Bukhari]

In one of his sermons calculated to instil the fear of Allah and the day of reckoning in the hearts of men, he said,

"O people of Quraish be prepared for the hereafter, I cannot save you from the punishment of Allah; O Bani Abd Manaf, I cannot save you from Allah; O Abbas, son of Abdul Mutalib, I cannot protect you either; O Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, even you I cannot save." [Sahahin]

He used to pray,

"O Allah! I am but a man. If I hurt any one in any manner, then forgive me and do not punish me." [Ahmed, Musnad]

He always received people with courtesy and showed respect to older people and stated:

"To honor an old man is to show respect to Allah."

He would not deny courtesy even to wicked persons. It is stated that a person came to his house and asked permission for admission. The Prophet (pbuh) remarked that he was not a good person but might be admitted. When he came in and while he remained in the house, he was shown full courtesy.

When he left A'isha (ra) said,

"You did not think well of this man, but you treated him so well."

The Prophet (pbuh) replied,

"He is a bad person in the sight of Allah who does not behave courteously and people shun his company because of his bad manners." [Sahih Bukhari]

Proceeding greetings,

He was always the first to greet another and would not withdraw his hand from a handshake till the other man withdrew his. If one wanted to say something in his ears, he would not turn away till one had finished. [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]

He did not like people to get up for him and used to say,

"Let him who likes people to stand up in his honour, he should seek a place in hell." [Abu Dawud]

He would himself, however, stand up when any dignitary came to him. He had stood up to receive the wet nurse who had reared him in infancy and had spread his own sheet for her. His foster brother was given similar treatment. He avoided sitting at a prominent place in a gathering, so much so that people coming in had difficulty in spotting him and had to ask which was the Prophet (pbuh). Quite frequently uncouth, Bedouins accosted him in their own gruff and impolite manner but he never took offence. [Abu Dawud]

He used to visit the poorest of ailing persons and exhorted all Muslims to do likewise. [Sahih Bukhari]

He would sit with the humblest of persons saying that righteousness alone was the criterion of one's superiority over another. He invariably invited people be they slaves, servants or the poorest believers, to partake with him of his scanty meals. [Tirmidhi]

Whenever he visited a person he would first greet him and then take his permission to enter the house. He advised the people to follow this etiquette and not to get annoyed if anyone declined to give permission, for it was quite likely the person concerned was busy otherwise and did not mean any disrespect. [Ibid.]

There was no type of household work too low or too undignified for him. A'isha (ra) has stated,

"He always joined in household work and would at times mend his clothes, repair his shoes and sweep the floor. He would milk, tether, and feed his animals and do the household shopping." [Qazi Iyaz: Shifa; Sahih Bukhari]

He would not hesitate to do the menial work of others, particularly of orphans and widows. [Nasi, Darmi]

Once when there was no male member in the house of the companion Kabab Bin Arat who had gone to the battlefield, he used to go to his house daily and milk his cattle for the inhabitants [Ibn Saad ]

Curtin Islamic Society will be organizing tajweed class in order to assist our brothers and sisters in improve perfecting the reading of Al-Quran Al-Karim in tarteel(slow and proper) and we humbly invite you to participate in this blessed effort to please Allah SWT. Tajweed class will be held every fortnightly(once every 2 weeks) alternating with Discovery Workshop Series in another week.

Rasulullah said,

"The best amongst you, are those who learn Al-Quran and teaches it"

DWS - Reaping Ramadhan Through Taqwa

+ Essence of fasting - Ramadhan is Madrasah to cultivate Taqwa

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

"O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) Taqwa"
-[Al-Baqarah 2:182]

+ Taqwa is an obligation upon all believer
Fi'il amar(commanding verb) in the verses of Al-Quran is wajib(obligatory) upon those who were directed.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْتَنظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُون

"O ye who believe! Have taqwa of Allah and let every soul look to what provision he has sent forth for the morrow."
[Al-Hashar, 59:18]

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam
[Ali-Imran 3:102]

+Taqwa is to be in highly cautious state

Umar R.A and Ka'ab Ibn Malik

Umar ibn Khattab (R.A) once asked Ka’ab (R.A),"Ka'ab, whats the meaning of Taqwa" .

In reply Ka’ab asked, “Have you ever had to traverse a thorny path?” Umar replied in the affirmative and Ka’ab continued, “How do you do so?”

Umar said that he would carefully walk through after first having collected all loose and flowing clothing in his hands so nothing gets caught in the thorns hence injuring him. Ka’ab said,

“This is the definition of taqwa, to protect oneself from sin through life’s dangerous journey so that one can successfully complete the journey unscathed by sin.”

Syed Qutb sain in Tafseer Fi Zilail Quran,

"To be in great detail in every act, constant fear, always guarding ones self from path fill with lust and desires"

+ A better aim for Muttaqin

Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (To return to).

Say: Shall I give you glad tidings of things Far better than those? For those who fear(Muttaqin), are Gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home; with companions pure (and holy); and the good pleasure of Allah. For in Allah.s sight are (all) His servants,-

+ Steps in achieving taqwa

1. Always in remembrance of our promises towards Allah SWT

وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَنِي آدَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَا ۛ أَن تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَـٰذَا غَافِلِينَ

And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! we bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection: Surely we were heedless of this.

[HQ Al-A'raf 7:172]

وَأَوْفُوا بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا عَاهَدتُّمْ وَلَا تَنقُضُوا الْأَيْمَانَ بَعْدَ تَوْكِيدِهَا وَقَدْ جَعَلْتُمُ اللَّهَ عَلَيْكُمْ كَفِيلًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُو

And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have made a covenant, and do not break the oaths after making them fast, and you have indeed made Allah a surety for you; surely Allah I . knows what you do.

[HQ An-Nahl 16:91]

2. Muraqabah

Muraqabah is a state of feeling always being close and watched by Allah. Parable of a student in an exam always being watched by invigilator, out of the real fear of being caught, he avoid the act of disobedience in fear of punishment.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ

It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.
[HQ Qaf 50:16]

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ

When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way.
[HQ Al-Baqarah 2:186]

Muraqabah in harus(halal) act : By protecting the a'dab and to always be grateful[syukr]
Muraqabah in Musibah(Hardships): To always have patience and remembering Allah in hardships

3. Muhasabah - count and contemplate

Count yourself(deeds) before you are being accounted(in front of Allah)
[Umar Al-Khattab]

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْتَنظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

O you who believe! be careful of (your duty to) Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent on for the morrow, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.
[HQ Al-Hasyr 59:18]

4. Mua'qabah - self punishment

Saidin Umar R.A mua'aqabah himself when he accidently missed Asr juma'ah(congregation) due to farming, he sold his whole lot of farm to teach himself and ensure himself not to miss congregation again.

Abu Talha R.A mua'qabah himself when he forgotten the number of rakaah in prayer when a bird flew and stood on his head, he also sold a lot of his farm.

وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَن يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

And those who when they commit an indecency or do injustice to their souls remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults-- and who forgives the faults but Allah, and (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done.
[HQ Ali-Imran 3:135]

5. Mujahadah - Struggle to the fullest

وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمَعَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways; and Allah is most surely with the doers of good.
[HQ Al-Ankabut 29:69]

وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

And say: "Work (righteousness): Soon will Allah observe your work, and His Messenger, and the Believers: Soon will ye be brought back to the knower of what is hidden and what is open: then will He show you the truth of all that ye did."
[HQ At-taubah 9:105]

+The Importance of eradicating bad deeds before overdoing an ibadah during Ramadhan

Heart disease such as arrogance, stinginess, riya', u'jub will only be empower by overdoing ibadah when it coexist. Remove all the bad deeds before doing further extended i'badah. It's also the main reason those who came to them ramadhan did not bring any changes in life.

CONTENT SUMMARY

Curtin Universtity agreed to allocate a place for friday prayer service and also the commissioning of Friday Prayer committee.Shuttle service will be maintained for the next one month or two until approval was given by JAIS.

Starting for today onwards and the rest of 2 months period,

follow the provided shuttle bus scheduling:

Yesterday on September the 9th, Curtin Islamic Society, Student Council and Administration Manager sat and discussed the remedial solution in addressing the issue of Friday Prayer. Alhamdulillah, we came to a solution which both benefits Curtin University and also Muslims students alike. The increasing numbers of students requires increasing frequencies of bus trips, hence tremendously increase the financial costing for transportation. This will pose long term effect in Curtin's financial standings.

While the solution we opt last week which is to have friday prayer on campus was the favored one by both Curtin University and us, to acknowledge the bookings and other services that will be provided by Curtin will require us to get the Islamic State Council [JAIS] before we can get a spot through official means. Hence, within the duration of about a month of waiting period for JAIS to respond to our application in licensing, admin has agreed to provide us Shuttle Service, and upon bus unavailability, prior notice will be given and quotations for external bus service will be under the expense supported by Curtin University.

MPH integrated Prayer Hall

After the licensing have been approved by JAIS, then only we could engage friday prayer on campus and allocated location will be Multi Purpose Hall. Infrastructure will place industrial fans and also the hall will be specifically book for friday prayer service from 10am - 2pm for preparation purposes. Water taps will be installed to allow jumaah make wudhu' and also any other modification required to ease up the service. To bare in mind, these are all still in the planning state and it is subjected to changes, optimal modification and also budget consideration.

Friday Prayer Committee

Curtin Islamic Society will be commissioning a committee which will be under the observation of JAIS whom will be approved as the imam, khatib[sermon], and also bilal in the area of Curtin University Campus. They will also be catering the preparatory works prior and also after the service. We may also provide a little bit of refreshment (subjected to sponsorships and budget allocation) for our brothers and sisters outside of the fasting month, which will close the friday prayer service and also Girls Talks programme which the muslimah have every friday.

This joint effort and planning was dedicated to establish a long term solution for muslims students and also for Curtin University Sarawak. Curtin Islamic Society would like to thank Ms.Viziaty Drahman [Administration Manager], and also Student Council for catering the welfare of muslim students in Curtin since day one.

Friday Prayer and Further Solution

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.h,

Last Friday Alhamdulillah muslim students in campus managed to have their own first friday prayer on campus. This last minute call was made to cater those who did not have transport since friday prayer bus was canceled. Originally the option was to car pool everyone to mosque, but 10 in the morning car pooling committee informed that they only have 3 cars in contact. I was also informed by Vice President that some of the Geology student have to sit for test until 12.30, hence city bus alternative was a no go for the the Geology students because city bus will only come in at 12 noon.

Dr. Adeline who is the Head of Registrar saw the committee preparing for friday prayer at the back of G2 fearing that theres not enough shade for the students, she made a request to the Student Service for us to shift to the shaded garden area in front Cafetaria. Alhamdulillah, started of with about 12 peoples, final count of about 60 students with the mix of local and international students participated in for the Friday Prayer. This was our first ever solat jum'at and alhamdulillah everything ran smoothly with every of pillars [rukun and syarat sah] of the i'badah maintained.

Since every juma'ah made in Malaysia must go through Islamic Legal Council of Malaysia, we had reported our congregation after the prayer to Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak [JAIS] and we will be preparing the paperwork to receive our very own approval to make Friday Prayer on campus, through legal process should take us about a month.

Thank you to the car pooling committee, they did their best in sending as much student to mosque, while those who did not have transport, thank you for having faithin us to conduct this and to have at least more than 40 peoples of jemaah[accordance to Shafie']. Special thanks to Dr.Adeline and campus service for the shades.

Be strong, and stay positive in the time of hardships. I've made a mistake in accusing and point fingers, to other people when it is our responsiblities to take care of our own obligation and not to put our religious obligation on the hand of other people. Last tution free week ive spent the whole week studying almost all the enactment of higher institution in malaysia:

To that we require everyone to stand strong and be alert in anything that shall happen. Assalamu'alaikum wbth.

First of all, we would like to thank Allah SWT for a great reward upon all the hardwork both the committees, sub-committees and also participant alike in making yesterdays event happening and hopefully with a good and blessed outcome.

Believe it or not, muslim database have increased from 175 students last semester, to 222 students this semester. That shows the degree of increment of muslim students this semester. Hopefully through this expansion of community we could strive and have a much more firm stand in the community on-campus itself. This will certainly be a plus point to assist our own welfare and also to generate more contribution "a'mal"(good deeds) to the community.

We also have also recently established a special delegates to allow smooth runnings of operation which concerns external parties, and we would like to give them a warm welcome to the ever-growing family :

Student Council's Treasurer Daphne P. Alhamdulillah and Thank you to student Council for their continuing support. Further feedbacks on Friday Prayer Shuttle will be addressed in future analysis.

CIS in the verge of closing down ...

Last semester, the 1st semester of 2009, Curtin Islamic Society(CIS) have been working hard catering for muslim society in Curtin Sarawak. Last semester, Student Council have decided to restrict only RM 700 subsidy only for clubs. This quota imposed upon clubs cut-throated us unlike the last Council, the subsidy was flexible and allocation of subsidy largely depend on the degree of contribution to students and the frequency and impact of proposed events. Hence any active clubs will have larger amount allocated while smaller clubs will be allocated accordingly.

Past council of Student Council under the care of Melissa, they had been very supportive in terms of taking care the welfare of students as they have allocated certain amount of subsidies for Friday Prayer Bus charges and taking care of the bus booking for CIS. Recent council have decided that CIS have to opt for charges ourselve hence cutting our subsidies from RM700 to RM300. RM 400 were needed to provide curtin muslim students who could NOT afford their own transport to go to the mosque for Friday Prayer. That left us with only RM 300 which is not even enough for a SINGLE full scale activity. To that I sincerely would like to thank with all sincerity to all the NGOs, Officials and individuals including our own supportive advisors of CIS for them we could continue to sustain our activities but with a lower frequencies than before.

The increasing numbers of muslim students both internationals and local students on 2nd semester 2009 will be needing us to increase bus trips from 1 trip 2 trips to and back from mosque. This increment of bus frequencies will need us to allocate at least RM800 to sustain our club this semester leaving us with deficit of RM100 to support our club. That leaves us with RM0 subsidies for events AND expenditures of extra RM 100 from our pocket money to continue our support for Friday Prayer Bus ONLY.

In order to further provide comfort, other services which CIS had to take care of is the moderation of Musolla(prayer room). Laundries and improvement will require financial aids and numbers of flip flops have to be increased. All this years CIS have been allocating our own financial aid WITHOUT the support of campus in order to operate musolla properly. Ramdhan activity such as Tarawikh prayer will require mosquto repellents and other needs to be taken care of.

Thus this semester frequencies of event have to be tonned down as to us CIS, religious obligation place highest priority and events and programmes should be placed second.

Last student councils meeting have witnessed many clubs have been closed with various reasons. Among them are violation of conducts and most of them are due to lack of participations(active member) AND low frequency of event. Of lately CIS have been suffering severe lack of participation which place our future in a great jeopardy.

Other than that, last Friday, our Friday Prayer Shuttle was unprofessionally canceled. We received verbal news regarding unavailabilities of prayer shuttle NOT from Uni Life themselve, but from a representative from student council. CIS have sent our welfare representative, Ibrahim Fazeel to negotiate for alternatives, but twice checked on the same week on bus booking, it was confirmed to be available. On friday noon itself, we were then informed by Bus Driver(Mr. Augustine) there were no bus available for Friday Prayer which led us to delay and uncertain negotiation with student service. After being pursued they can only give us single trip to mosque without any trip back. If they have clarified and confirmed the unavailability, CIS could have made other arrangements with private bus services with our own expenses. Believe it or not this was not the first time and it had happened quite a few numbers of time. We think it was unprofessionally handled and it is a disrespect to our own religion in order to fulfil our obligations and we PAID for it using our own subsidies.

For 3 years we have pursued University Life regarding HALAL Certification issues as we received many complaints from student itself that there some doubts regarding foods on the campus cafeteria. Past years, Curtin University have approved that the food was 100% Halal on campus but was later then took out from the student manual this year for an unknown reason. Assurance that they gave before should be proven , because plenty of students complaint to us that HALAL food was one of the major reason and point that they've considered before choosing Curtin University as they investment for higher education and some of them felt cheated because of it.

To all the muslim students out there, current CIS committee members and alot of our committee alumni have made arrangements to further address this issue and we will continue to fight this rights of ours and muslim students alike in order to survive and allowing us to perform our religious obligation with less hassle and worrisome atmosphere.

I personally would like to thank our respectful advisor who negotiated on scheduling so that NO CLASSES are to be held on friday prayer time slot to allow muslim students perform their obligation without missing or skipping classes.

In order to sustain current challenges and hardships we CIS need you to stay ONE with us all the time and be aware of the update that we will be bringing.

Please participate in ALL our events because we are on the verge of closing down. The PARTICIPATION is NOT TRIVIAL issue as thats the major reason our club are not closed for the time being. Student council will observe the number students coming for our event to confirm the number of participant.

In this note i would like thank a few people from student council to assist our welfare, Shahul Hameed , Fared Abu Bakar and a few others who helped us negotiation and arrangement in order for us to continue to survive the hardships and to ease the or continuely salted pain.

I would like to thank to our active members because of you guys people can perform religious obligations, to have bus for Eid to the mosque when they cant afford flying home, to allow us to continue our fight in sustaining musolla and continue our contribution to locals like Peryatim[Orphanage Organization], Yayasan A'mal[A'mal Foundation], and other locals and NGOs. You have proven yourselve worthy of Allah SWT's mercy and we will continue fighting for your rights and comfort.

To those who felt it is not an obligation to participate and care for the society, if a Fardhu [obligations] are not met, the path to attain and make Fardhu possible will also become WAJIB(compulsory). Prove your commitment to your religion and be proud of who you are. We are not an organization divided by hijabbis or non-hijabbis, locals nor internationals. You are a muslim and theres no question why you shouldnt play part.

I ask everyone to understand our current state and what future will brings. Do not let our current issues be in the middle of other peoples rights to Allah SWT. Everyone will be questioned accordingly and i hope everyone will take part in this quest of faith in CURTIN itself. Please DO NOT argue how bad the foods were and why theres NO THIS AND THAT. You DO NOT KNOW how hard we worked just to survive current situation.
